Chitra had told in an interview that she first met Jagjit Singh in a studio to sing a jingle. After hearing Jagjit’s voice, he even refused to sing with him. During this time in 1968, Chitra was going through difficult times in her marriage. She had made up her mind to leave her husband Debo Prasad and later also took the custody of her daughter Monica.

At the same time, Jagjit fell in love with Chitra’s singing and her personality and even proposed to her, but Chitra refused. Jagjeet, who was deeply in love with Chitra, then decided that he would express his love in front of Chitra’s husband. According to a report in India Today, Jagjeet had asked Chitra’s husband – I want to marry your wife.

Both of them got married in 1969 and gave birth to son Vivek. The family members of this couple never accepted this marriage. An interesting thing is that Chitra used to lovingly call Jagjeet as Papa and Jagjeet used to call her Mummy.

Broke after son’s death
Everything was going well in both of their lives when bad news came in July 1990. Their son Vivek had died in a car accident. The family was shaken after Vivek’s departure at the age of 21. After this both of them stayed away from music for a long time. Chitra gave up singing after that. He said in an interview many years later – My throat had closed on its own.

Jagjit Singh suffered a brain hemorrhage in September 2011. He was treated in the hospital for several days but he could not be saved and he left this world on 10 October 2011.
